The simplest designs are often the hardest to execute. This modernist pine table with flush joints was to receive an impeccable spray finish so the joints had to be perfect.

Cypress slabs are joined with walnut butterflies, angled on the edges and sealed with a hard-wax finish. The legs are steel. David and I stripped, refinished and reupholstered six Lane Rhythm chairs to go with it.

Our neighbors needed a sturdy grilling table so David and I immediately suggested concrete and cypress since we liked our outdoor kitchen so much. This form, without a sink cutout, was much simpler. It is personalized with an embedded mountain range since our neighbors are avid hikers.

We wanted to build a concrete countertop so when the new house needed an outdoor sink we jumped at the chance. In Japan we learned the practicality of storing your shoes near the door. This cabinet combines shoe storage with a drop zone for phones, keys and mail as well as a charging station.
